A Must Have Subscription Box for Kids!

STEAM toys

How is homeschooling going for you? I have to admit I am just about done with it for this year however, I have found a something that is helping me cope with the mom guilt of it all. I came across WONDERBOX on Instagram awhile back and I was instantly intrigued. I am familiar with the concept of STEAM based learning and feel it is such an amazing philosophy. STEAM stands for  SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, ENGINEERING, ART and MATH. The idea behind STEAM based learning is that instead of learning disciplines as independent subjects it takes  an interdisciplinary approach and combines the 5 strands together. STEAM aligns with the way we work and problem solve in our daily lives. Making it an exceptional way of instructing and learning. I spoke with the founder of  Wonderbox on the phone  I was so excited to learn about her passion for STEAM learning. Over the years I have tried to purchased educational toys however GOOD ones are actually not that easy to find. Wonderbox makes it easy for me not to have to hunt around an look forever to find great toys my kids will enjoy because they are shipped right to your door with their awesome subscription boxes. You can get a box every month or else once every three months.  These are GREAT for gift giving….. seriously I know grandparents, aunts and uncles are always wondering what to get for kids these days and I personally think a Wonderbox subscription is the perfect solution!!!!

Our May Amazon Haul!

We are almost done week 9 of quarantine and I have finally broken down and starting to order a few things online. For the first 8 weeks it felt really good to not buy a thing. We didn’t need anything and living with less and spending less felt great… mind you I was making less to due to all of this.  I am a major introvert so staying home and being with my family has been awesome.  We have filled our days with homeschooling ( kinda…ish) , eating, being outside, eating , taking drives, eating and long evening walks…followed by more eating.  Ok I am kidding with the exact line up of eating but it felt, at one point the days were rolling onto each other with preparing meals, buying food , eating snacks  etc. Apparently our kids need to be fed a million times throughout the day when they are home!! This past week Kim and I decided its time to perhaps cut down the carb intake a bit  so I included a couple of our go to’s in the haul!!

A few things that have made our Amazon Haul this month:

  1.  Kids books  and specifically  Magnus O’Meere Mind Pioneer by local Author Kristin Pierce. I absolutely LOVE her approach to writing and teaching kids to think outside the box and ignite passion within themselves. Her entire philosophy is AMAZING and I am a big fan!!!

2. This Esspresso machine because I realize that to have kidsd at home 24/7 requires a couple of extra shots of espresso in my coffee.  My husband and I just do an old school coffee from a regular full pot machine….. no keurigs over here!! I love to add an extra shot to my regular coffee with cream and its like an Americano but no water:)

3. I just picked up the book ATOMIC HABITS by James Clear for myself because I felt I was sitting there reading my phone a little too much and that was not leading by example for my kids. As well I have been doing  the 75 hard challenge  which requires you to read 10 pages of a self development book daily. Since the challenge is all about establishing habits and I have heard such rave reviews about the book I grabbed it and so far I think it is AMAZING!!!!!

4. Maxi is our Montessori kid and to be honest  she has been the hardest challenge in all of this.  She gets bored quickly and has been actually tapping out and putting herself down for a nap lately when we ask her to do ” school” . I am slowly gathering a few Montessori resources and this book is a great one.

5.  Tucker is in grade one and is still learning how to read on his own so gathering resources for him has been fun.  I do not believe in busy work  for learning. I like the old school basics of  learning how to spell so I am loving this Workbook

6. Another workbook for Tucker is this MATH one.  We do math, Kumon , spelling and writing each day  and then we are done!!

7.  I have been majorly obsessed with skin care and taking care of my skin while we are home and recently grabbed this GUA SHA set and I love it!! My other obsession is THIS SKIN CARE you tube channel. Where you can learn more about using the beautiful stones for lymphatic drainage.

8. These pj’s for maxi because i am not kidding she has not worn regular clothes since this all started and she stopped going to school.

9. This KETO PANCAKE mix! Ok I am not a die hard pancake fan but these were so good they have so much flavour, great texture and really satisfying!!!

10. These Protein Dinks Mixed with  a shot of espresso over ice is my afternoon delight these days!!!

My Top 5 Tips For a Grandparent Sessions You Will Cherish Forever!

Grandma and Grandpa aren’t always top of mind when it comes to family photos. It’s easy for us to get caught up in just getting them done, especially when you have kids that may not be thrilled about photos to start with. There are plenty of reasons why grandparents should be in your family photos and I have a few tips and suggestions to make this happen…I promise these are pictures that YOU need to have and will never regret booking. Here are 5 tips you need to know!

1. YOU ( yes you MOM ) need to actually BOOK this session yourself and make it happen. Your parents are not used to getting portraits like this taken. They are used to the old days where you all dressed up in matching formal attire and went to a studio where you all sat down and hopefully got one good  picture where everyone is looking. I bet you know exactly what picture I am talking about. If you have one you should DM me on Instagram I want to see it!!! These old school studio sessions  are the reasons why most men act as though photos are the equivalent of getting  root canal!!!

2. Think about WHY you need to do this. Just like kids, grandparents do not keep and trust me I cannot type these words without bawling at the thought of loosing a parent. Your children grow and change so quickly and your parents may not be around forever so if you think about it its absolutely magical to freeze these two fleeting life stages together in one frame.

3. Feed your kids and book the session on an evening ( for outdoor sessions) when you have NOTHING else to do. I have been doing this now for over a decade and I don’t know a better way to tell you this but……. feed your kids!!!! Hungry kids do not cooperate… like ever in the history of ever!!! Even if you plan to eat supper after the session shove 500 snacks into them before the session…. please just please!!!!! As well being rushed and having somewhere to be after your session just makes everyone nervous and I promise you kids will not cooperate on your timeline so make it an evening to remember and just spend time with each other go for ice cream after.

4. Let GO of Cheese and expectations!! As you can see from he pictures of my own mother not many have the subjects looking at the camera. Like the old portrait experience of sitting there and forcing a “CHEESE” smile from everyone has gone by the wayside, so has forced smiles and stiff poses. The unnatural poses and fake smiles are NOT what you want to remember. Help your parents realize this before the session and give them a pep talk about relaxing and just having fun. Love, hug, kiss tickle and laugh with the kiddos because THAT is what we always want to remember. There is no need to try and get everyone looking at the camera…. it takes too much time and effort for pictures that do not make the best memories!

5. Do not wait until all the grand-kids can be together!!!!! These sessions are not intended for grandma and grandpa to stand there with all 26 grandchildren. These session are about capturing and documenting that special bond between a grandparent and a child. My goal is to take the pictures of the little moments the kids share with each grandparent individually. I am sure your sister in law might be mad at you for booking a session without her kids involved but hey… tell her to book her own session!!!!

I recently SOLD out of a Grandparent mini Session dates but I have added 3 more slots via thins link:

Grab a spot now and then seed the link to your sister in law!!!!!

My name is Janna and I currently live in Saskatoon, Sask. I have an in home studio space that I use for shooting newborns, milestones and motherhood sessions.

All in all, I am surviving on coffee and very little sleep but I am happy. I have the privilege to work with absolutely wonderful families who trust me to hold their little bitty babies and honour me with the creation of their memories.  I do feel truly blessed. I would love to meet you and maybe learn a little bit about you and your family!
